Baking Soda Conditioning Treatment Recipe

So, I'm getting into the thick of my relaxer stretch (no pun intended lol) and I've been on the search for the BEST homemade DC treatments. First it was the yogurt DC, and this week it was a baking soda deep conditioner. I got the idea from a video from YouTube by NaturallyNike. I didn't use the same exact recipe that she did, here's mine:

1/3 Cup (enhanced) VO5 Moisture Milks Strawberries and Cream Conditioner*
1 blob (sorry lol) Suave Humectant Conditioner (this was a last minute addition... hence no measuring)
2 tbsp Achillea Conditioner
1 1/2 tbsp A&H Baking Soda
*When the conditioner was half-way finished, I added half a can of coconut milk, a little Olive Oil, and a little honey. I use it as a DC or as a co-wash and I refrigerate it so it won't spoil.
Like she advises in her video, I let the mixture sit for a little bit (maybe about ten minutes).

As far as application, I parted my hair into four sections and I ONLY put baking soda mixture on my new growth because I just get scared sometimes to experiment with my relaxed ends. So after I put the baking soda mixture on my NG, I put some of my enhanced VO5 on my ends, twisted the section up and bobby pined it to my head, and moved on to the next section. I left the treatment on my hair, under a plastic shower cap, for about thirty minutes (from after I was done applying it) and then rinsed it out in the shower.

One thing I noticed (and that kinda scared me) was that once the treatment had been in my hair and I took the plastic cap off before rinsing it out, it smelling a LOT like a perm. And even after I rinsed my hair, co-washed, and everything, my hair still smelled a little perm-y. I looked the ingredient up on Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database and while it's not in any relaxers, it IS in quite a few hair bleaching kits... so maybe that's why it has that familiar chemical-like smell.

After rinsing it out, I co-washed my hair (still in 4 sections) with Suave Humectant Conditioner. I did my normal moisturizing routine (still in 4 sections), braided each section up, and allowed it to air-dry.

After it dried, my hait felt very soft (not as soft as after the yogurt treatment though). Also, my curls in my NG were SO defined... almost made me wish I was all natural!!!

Verdict: I'll probably try it again in the future but the smells scared me and I'm still a little worried about the pH balance of my hair after the treatment.
