What do you do when you're feeling discouraged?

As human beings, we aren't perfect... that means that sometimes when we set goals or even just along our path in everyday life, we will come upon hurdles that will try us and sometimes cause us to feel discouraged. In the worst cases, it may cause us to give up on our goals all together. What can we do when this happens to avoid that? (I'll get to that in a second...)

My personal testimony (not related to hair! wow!) relates to academics and finances. As you guys know, I'm currently a college student in Atlanta, however, my college career started at the school of my dreams: the University of Michigan (GO BLUE!). I went to Michigan for 2 years until I hit some financial strife (involving family but I won't get into that long, confusing, sordid story!) that caused me to have to basically drop out of school for two and a half years. During that time, I was so unhappy, depressed, and most of all DISCOURAGED! (the photo to the left is of me and was taken on my 19th b-day; right at the beginning of that tough period...) I felt like it was impossible for me to finish college and go on to be an attorney like I've always dreamed since I was a little girl. But how did I move past the negative emotions that I was having, get up, and re-claim my life? It wasn't easy...

The first step is to allow yourself to feel disappointed. Know bad things sometimes happen to good ppl, and just because you are dealing with a rough time, it doesn't mean you're a bad person. Also, the saying "a setback is the set-up for a comeback!" seems trite but it's so true!


Second: start small... make short-term goals that lead you on the path to your ultimate goal. For me, that was going out, moving to Ohio, and getting a job to pay my debts to my school. After I did that, I made the tough decision to transfer schools to avoid the problem of funds being over-extended in the future. Next, I applied to the school, got in, and here I am today!


The last step is remaining positive. There is power in positive thinking, guys! And saying it gives it power... so every morning say to yourself "I CAN DO THIS!" and then go out and DO IT! You deserve the best and are more than capable of achieving everything that you want to achieve.

One thing we must allow ourselves to do is accept that there will be times that we fall short of what we plan to do... as OutKast said in their song "Ms. Jackson:" "...you can plan a pretty picnic but you can't predict the weather..." All you can do is make the best of the card that you've been dealt and it will always work out if you give it your absolute best, I promise! And you know what? It's an on-going journey... even when the storm is over, you have to keep yourself conditioned to weather the next one.

  1. I do find myself feeling discourage and I find that my hair diary really helps with this. Just looking back at the pictures helps me realise where I have been and where I really want to get to. Sounds corny but taking regular pictures really helps me!
