New hair vs. Broken hair

As I was sitting under the dryer tonight trying to get my braids dry (rocking a braid out tomorrow!) I felt the top of my head to try to guesstimate (yes, I made that word up) how much longer I'd have to sit under the dreaded dryer. To my dismay I felt a REALLY short hair... like maybe 2 inches long, if that. I felt around and started feeling these short hairs all over my head!! They were all in varying lengths, but none were long enough to catch in the plaits I have throughout my head! Of course, I had a moment of sheer panic. Had all of my hard work on my hair been in vain? Was this wide-spread breakage that I was just now catching???? Really guys... I was freaked out.

I took a moment to think about it though and I remembered that our hair grows in cycles... and when we shed hair, the follicle is going to produce another hair in its place... maybe that explained all these short little hairs. So I got on the computer and did a little research and found that the way to tell  the difference between the remnants of a broken hair and a new, baby hair is by the ends. If the end is tapered (almost like what remains after one half of a split-end breaks off) then it is a new hair. If the end is blunt, split, or otherwise damaged then it is, in fact, a broken hair. So I ripped (yes ripped... not good for my hair but I HAD to know the truth!) three short strands from random places on my head and low and behold! They were all tapered!!

Moral of the story is my hair isn't breaking off, I just have new little hairs growing from hair that has been shed in the past!

Lesson learned! <3

PS: here are the links from where I learned this good info! Hope this helps someone else out there!

  1. This is some good information :o)

  2. This post is such a relief! A couple of weeks ago I noticed a bunch of short hairs sticking up and felt so disheartened. I just yanked a couple strands, and they're tapered!! Thanks for this info

  3. You're welcome, I'm glad it helped!
