He broke my heart, now I'm cutting off my hair!!!

A thread on one of the hair boards that I frequent, BHM(!) got me thinking... is it a bad thing to cut your hair after a really bad break up?? Does that signify that this man (or woman) had "that much power over you to make you cut your hair"??

Thoughts?

(For the record, I think that it's natural to want to make some sort of change after a big break-up... it's your hair to cut!! Cut it!! Shoot, I decided to GROW OUT my hair after a horrible break up... is that just as "bad"??)

On a similar vein... I've been having the urge to cut my hair a la Nia Long for a little while now... at first I was thinking I'd do it after I made BSL and got bored with my hair but now I'm thinking: why the heck not now??

IDK... I'll have to marinate on this for a while.

  1. i recently cut off all my hair after 8 years of growing it. it wasn't because of a bad break up..just a bad period in my life. and i must say that it was truly freeing. it just felt like a huge weight had been lifted and like i was starting anew. perhaps this could be mind over matter. at first it was definitely weird looking at myself, and i had a little (tiny, tiny) amount of "oh.em.gee. what did i do?" but it taught me to love myself differently (for the better).

but, i agree it's your hair and you should be free to do what you want with it whenever you want. and it's hair..it will grow back. that's something i've learned to accept..

  2. Hmmmm. I could never do it. I'd feel like I was giving my emotions to much power over me if how I was feeling brought me to snip all my hair off. I've be even angrier with myself. I'm a little attached my hair lol, I'd be mad I chopped it off on an irrational whim. My hair makes me feel good about myself. If I cut it while I'm at a low, it follows that I'd feel even worse once I calmed down. There are other outlets, clothes, dishes, his car (jk!!!!) :)

  4. I think you shouldn't.
Not because of the whole ohh, he had that much power over you blah blah blah, but because I don't think you should do anything drastic after a breakup. All them crazy emotions...the best thing you can do is sit down someplace and meditate until you have everything worked out.

Cutting your hair may feel good at first (especially if your SO loved your hair), but I feel like once those emotions of resentment and sadness go away, you probably won't like it as much.

Cutting your hair after an overall trying period in your life is different, IMO. I can't explain why, but it just is.
Anyway, my vote is no no no. Just leave your head alone until your mind is right.

  5. Thanks for your comments ladies!!

@ahmani(!!!!) thanks for commenting!!! =) I agree, there is something freeing over taking control over one thing that you have 100% say over: your appearance. And you're so right, regardless, it will always grow back!!

@jeni lmao@ "his car" haha, Waiting to Exhale, much?? But I agree, if it's just like "OMG, you broke my heart!!" **snip, snip** then that is kinda irrational and if you are attached to your hair, it probably WOULD make it worse!!

@dee girl, I am not planning on cutting my hair at the moment... maybe at the end of next year or something, once I reach my goals then I'll cut it off and stop caring so much!!

@Chaos You know, I think I can see what you mean about a trying time being different than a break-up... in a break-up there tends to be an explosion of emotions while during trying times, the emotions tend to build up over a longer period of time, making a haircut in that time more likely to be better thought out.

  6. I have cut my hair after a breakup on more than one occasion. It's hard to explain but prior to those cuts, I felt weighed down by all the mess I was feeling and cutting it was....freeing. I don't regret it b/c i love it when my hair is short.

Now as for you cutting your hair, I say do it!! Short hair styles are so much fun and probably the lowest maintenance you will ever have to deal with! Do it do it do it!!
