Product Review: Optimum OptiCalm Pre-Relaxer Protector

What they say: "Easy to use and rinse formula for added protection and comfort."

Ingredients: Mineral Oil/Paraffinum Liquidum, Dicaprylyl Maleate, Silica, Isopropyl Myrisate, Hydrogenated Styrene/Isoprene Copolymer, Hydrogenated Styrene/Butadiene Copolymer, Butylparaben

What I say: This $%^# don't work! LOL, no... really! I have an extremely sensitive scalp, but I am also extremely lazy. So when I came across this product online one day late last spring, I was bound and determined to find it! I searched drugstores and BSS's high and low until I found it. Over time, I have become less and less enamored with it. I will list my grievances.
  1. I bought this product SOLELY because of the applicator bottle. Unfortunately, the applicator is useless. Because of the consistency of the product, it's difficult to know (when self-applying) whether the product has made it out of the bottle or if you're applying air to your scalp (is it just me?!).
  2. The consistency is like watered-down Vaseline.... i.e. not near thick or "sturdy" enough to protect the scalp from the onslaught of chemicals during the relaxer process. My Silk Elements Lye Relaxer in regular laughs loudly at this OptiCalm.
These two reasons (pretty much all there is to a relaxer base... It has to come out of the container and it has to protect the scalp... #thatisall) are why I would never recommend for anyone to buy this product and I give it 1/5 stars (it gets one for being a cool idea for a lazy gal like myself...). Softsheen Carson missed the boat with this one...

  1. bwahahaha! your initial line was hilarious! I have a great base that I actually don't need....its the "tingly" kind and works very well. However, I go to the salon to touch up now and so its just sitting. I'm trying to clean house so to speak so I'd love to send it to someone who will actually get good use out of it. Shoot me your addy via PM on BHM or YT and I'll happily ship it to you.

  4. haha I know exactly what you mean. I use the Optimum relaxer and it comes with this stuff. I only use it on my pre-relaxed hair.

Here's a tip: Put your base in the fridge before applying it to your scalp. That way, you can actually tell if it's getting on your scalp, and it also cools your scalp in preparation for the relaxer process.

Results are on MY hair, but that does not guarantee that products/methods/techniques will work the same for you (though I HOPE they do!!) Happy Hair Growing!!
