Essence Magazine natural hair v(b)logger debate

AfricanExport discussed the issue on her blog here and I just wanted to weigh in...

A lot of vloggers are upset because they feel that the magazine was throwing shade towards YouTubers as a source of info for ladies who are on their natural hair journey.

I can actually see both sides of the debate. Of course every person can only speak from their experiences with their hair type/texture/state/etc. However, I would argue that that is the case for all forms of media (YouTube, blogs, forums, etc!). It is our job as consumers of this information to "weed out" what info is applicable to us and what info is not.

Do I think Essence was fair in telling their readers to beware of YT vlogger's while accepting only info from their site and NO! But do I think that ladies on their HHJ (relaxed, natural, and otherwise!) should be wary of all advice/info given over the web? YES!

Have you ladies heard about this debate? Weigh in!! =)

  1. amen @ last sentence! and to add, i'm wary of info given even at the doctor's office re: black hair if the dr. isn't Black!

I also am not sure why the "natural community" on YT is referenced all the time like there aren't relaxed girls too! (do i sound bitter?! lol)

  2. I dunno. I don't think Essence is right in giving a blanket statement to beware of ALL the vloggers out there. What's the alternative to that? Stylists who don't know anything either?

Like you said Shika, folks have to weed out the bad information from the good information and not necessarily take everyone's word as gospel.

@EbonyCPrincess I don't think the relaxed hair community is referenced right now b/c the natural hair movement is the 'in thing' for the moment. It would be nice if us relaxed girls were mentioned...we have hair issues too!

  3. Sounds interesting. I need to check out that article. In one issue, Essence may say "beware of Vloggers, in the next, they'll be like, "The 10 Hottest Vloggers you need to know!"
