Pre 'Poo (puh-ree p-hoo) in pictures

Ask any healthy hair-nista and she'll tell you that pre 'pooing is a majorly important step in any wash day regimen.

Well, you might ask, what is pre 'pooing (cause it sounds kinda nasty!). Pre 'pooing is applying anything to your hair and scalp, prior to shampooing, to protect them from the drying effect of shampoo. Think of it like this (preface; this is Shika's wonky interpretation... it is not scientifically proven!!!): the shampoo's job is to strip while it cleanses... if you have added moisture to your hair and scalp, the shampoo will strip away the added moisture but not ALL the moisture... if that makes sense! Basically, the pre 'poo puts more moisture in your hair so that when the shampoo is doing it's job, it won't completely strip your hair in the process... kind of why we pre-treat our relaxed ends prior to a touch up... Haha (I guess this is why magazines like Essence say that you shouldn't trust bloggers/vloggers!!)

Anyway, the final result of a pre 'poo should be non-stripped, dried out hair POST 'poo!

Personally, I have a pretty firm pre 'poo process:

First I oil and massage my scalp using a carrier oil (in this
picture it was castor oil) infused with essential oils.
Then I saturate the length of my hair with a "cheapie"
conditioner and "seal" it with any oil I choose.
After applying my pre 'poo, I let it sit on my hair for 30mins to an hour (about as long as an episode of Gossip Girl on Netflix... my new addiction) and then proceed to shampooing my hair!

How do you pre 'poo??

Questions? Additional comments? Email me at

  1. This may seem like, but a dumb question, but here it goes:
do you still need to deep condition, after doing this pre-poo?
    I'm thinking about incorporating a pre-poo.

  2. I use honey or do an oil treatment. I've tried the conditioner pre-poo but finds it doesn't work as well as honey or an oil.

  3. I love pre poo'ing my hair. I can't imagine not doing it.....

I want to try a pre poo with honey and either grapeseed or hemp seed oil.

  4. I'm a very firm believer in pre-pooing! I mainly do a hot oil treatment but I'll sometimes use conditioner if I feel like my hair needs extra moisture.

On my scalp I use a mix of coconut, eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree and vitamin E, and on the length, grapeseed or hemp or safflower... or all three mixed together.

It is an added step but I think the results and benefits totally make it worth it!
