Styling tool face off: Carusos vs. Hot Rollers

A whiiile back, I asked you guys if you wanted me to do a comparison between hot rollers and caruso rollers. The overwhelming answer was yes!

Both carusos and hot rollers are a great way to amp up a hair style without wrecking your hair with direct heat. I have used both types of rollers to breathe life into an old roller-wrap (or flat iron!) in addition to saving styles gone awry! The question is: do you need both of them? If not, which is better?

I can most definitely say that each has its pros and cons...

Caruso Pros:
  • Super long lasting curls (they usually last most of the day without dropping!)
  • Quick setting (it takes about 8 minutes to set)

Caruso Cons:
  •  It can be hard, sometimes, to create the "soft curls" look.
  • Because you're working with steam, you have to be careful not to get your hair wet sometimes (especially if you are natural or texlaxed)
  • Can sometimes get tangled up in hair during the take-down process.
Hot Roller Pros:
  • Effortlessly provide the sexy, tousled curls look.
  • Less likely to get entangled in hair (well the type that I have are...)

Hot Roller Cons:
  • More heat than carusos (can't over-use them or else it defeats the no-heat/low-heat purpose!)
  • Take a bit longer to set (I usually keep them in for at least 20 minutes)
  • Curls fall quickly if the elements are wrong (ahem... humid, Southern springs/summers)

Overall, if I had to pick only one, I would pick my carusos (lucky for me, I don't have to choose though!). However, both are useful addition to any hair girl's arsenal of tools!

Which do you prefer? Carusos? Hot rollers? Both? Weigh in! =)

  1. Excellent post!!! Do you use end papers with your carusos?

    1. Sometimes. I usually do with hot rollers every time I use them though.

  2. I love them both! I would think that the Caruso set would be better though because it could fall into the soft curls instead of starting off with the really soft curls that fall into being straight, right? And maybe they'd be more to your liking if you used bigger sections, perhaps?
    I love regardless!

    1. Thank you! That's exactly right! It totally depends on preference and/or the desired style.

  3. I like the Carusos! (But I've never used Hot rollers, so I'm a little biased). :)

    1. Teehehe I think if you had to have only one, Carusos are the way to go!

  4. great post :)... i use hot rollers sometimes and i'm a big fan. i have recently been looking into caruso rollers so thanks for the info!

    1. Definitely try the carusos (even if you have a friend who will let you borrow them so you can get a feel for them!).

  5. Great comparison. I don't have hot rollers but the Caruso review was dead on. I don't use it when I'm too far post because it will puff up my roots and my ends do get tangled around the roller sometimes. Like the other poster said, I do like the way the Caruso curls fall.

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has experienced that!
