My sensitive scalp: Relaxer decision is made!

After agonizing over my decision to no longer use lye relaxers, I finally made my decision about what relaxer to use on my next touch up...
After discussing with my mom (I often look to her to co-sign on most of my "major" decisions!) I have decided to try using "regular no-lye" relaxers before I drop the dough on the Phyto relaxer. When I posed my dilemma to her, she asked me why I was jumping to the most expensive alternative first. When she asked I was looking like "errr....." LOL. Hence, for my next touch up, I will be using a regular no-lye relaxer!

The next dilemma is, what brand??? To decide, I've been looking to women with gorgeous heads of hair who no-lye relax. I've narrowed my choices down to Optimum Care No-Lye Conditioning Relaxer System and Organic Root Stimulator's No-Lye relaxer... I'm planning on relaxing in 2-3 weeks so I have a bit of time to decide which one.

Which no-lye relaxer do you prefer?

  1. My mom is my decision maker, too! I've been an ORS girl for years and have no complaints. Perhaps other ladies will offer their opinions, too?

    1. My mom actually uses ORS religiously and loves it... idk though, I think I'm leaning towards the optimum line...

  2. I like them both, but I used the Optimum Care relaxer for my last touch up and I loved the results. I really can't compare the two because I have not used the ORS in a couple years. But when I was using it (pre hair journey) I didn't notice any breakage or extra shedding.

  3. I'm a Dark & Lovely for color-treated hair gal. It doesn't burn at all! When my color grows out, I do want to try the Optimum because I've only heard good things about it. It's funny because I've been thinking about going to lye because it's so much better for your hair, but when I remember the burning, I wuss out.

    1. I used to love me some dark and lovely! Lol. But the lye/no-lye dilemma kills me every time. My hair loved the lye relaxers but my scalp hates it :(

  5. Lemme tell you something. That Optimum Care Relaxer? *Rasheeda voice Love&HH ATL* put it on my hair make me wanna marry it! LMBO! Forreal, I'd be interested to see if you get the same fabulous results as me, I've never gone hard in the paint for a relaxer before this one. And I'm SO glad I decided to go no-lye and I haven't had any of the "dryness" issues ppl complain about either.

Love the subtle changes to the blog, you and Jeni are freakin graphics masters!

But you know I will keep ya'll up to date on how it goes... as of right this second I'm pretty much set on the Optimum... I still have two weeks before my touch up though (still time for me to be indecisive!)

  6. Sending you well wishes...what ever you choose! :-) I thought about the Phyto relaxer too. Do you know anyone who uses it?

    1. No...! I searched and searched for blogs by women who used in regular... I could only find threads on the hair boards with women who talked about using it... the threads were from years ago...

  7. I haven't used either of those brands, but I do love my Affirm Fiberguard no-lye relaxer. Good luck on your decision and I hope that this will be a viable solution to your scalp issues. 'Cause that Phyto costs a pretty penny!

    1. I looked into Affirm but it was so hard to find via my regular online shopping sources (since I'm boycotting the BSS right now lol). And yes, I have to make sure that it's the only option before I drop $60/touch up...

  8. I really wanted to stick with lye relaxers too, but they just didn't agree with my scalp. I currently use Soft & Beautiful Triple Hydration Relaxer, but I'm curious about Optimum relaxer now. I know you'll keep us updated.

  9. I've used both Optimum (no lye) and ORS relaxers (no-lye and lye) on my hair. The ORS no-lye laughed at my new growth, leaving me with the most underprocessed and dry hair ever!!! The lye version left it underprocessed as well but the hair strands were not dry but nothing spectacular.
The Optimum Care is the one I always go back to and it never fails: no dry hair, no dry scalp, no burning whatsoever.

  10. Omg I thought they were dangerous lol.. I've relaxed my hair for almost 10 years but just stopped (im transitioning now) .. I've never used LYE relaxers and even with no lye relaxer I suffered burns and a lot of complications.. ive never even seen a relaxer in the hair shop that does not say "no lye".. anyway I recommend the Olive Oil (Organics or something I think).. Especially the kids one since you get protective scalp gel and a treatment for the rest of your hair to prevent over processing :) xx
