Weigh in: Do you use your steamer with or without a plastic cap?

Over the past couple of years, "steaming" (using a hair steamer to optimize the moisture your hair receives in a deep conditioning session) has become more and more popular. However, there is one facet of steaming that seems to be a bit unclear: is the use of the plastic conditioning cap necessary as it is when using a hooded dryer for deep conditioning?

The question comes from a recent experience. On my last visit to my local Dominican salon, I opted to receive their conditioning treatment. With the treatment came a few minutes under the steamer. When the woman who shampooed my hair was about to put me under the steamer, however, she put a plastic cap on my head! Now this struck me as weird because whenever I steam my hair at home, I do not use a plastic cap... did I miss something?

So, weigh in, do you (or would you) use a plastic conditioning cap when utilizing a hair steamer? Why? Why not?

Questions? Additional comments? Email me at

  1. How is your hair supposed to be steamed if it's covered up? If the point is heat why bother with the steamer? Just go under the hooded dryer.

    1. I agree, I thought it kind of defeated the purpose... :S

  2. I do not use a plastic cap when I sit under my steamer.

  3. No plastic cap! Did you notice a difference in your hair?

  4. I always used a plastic cap because I didn't the first time I used it, and when the hot water dripped and burned my shoulder, I was afraid it could do the same thing to my hair. Shrug... made sense at the time, but maybe it defeated the purpose. Lol.

  5. I dont have a steamer of my own. I am planning to get the huetiful steamer soon though!. When I used to go to Dominican salons I always asked to go under the steamer without a plastic cap. i did notice that other customers who didnt ask were put under the steamer with a plastic cap. It was weird to me.

  6. It depends on how my hair is styled, pre-poo or post. If I do use a cap I cut holes in it b/c the only purpose for me wearing it is to make sure all of my hair is under the steamer.

  7. I've steamed with a plastic cap and my hair felt LOADED with moisture....
