4 ways to spice up protective styling

It's the most wonderful time of the year....! LOL. Ok, it's getting colder out and you know what that means--time to pull that hair up and protect it from the dry late-fall/winter air! But when protective styling (at least in my experience) it is soo easy to get into a styling rut (hey, I have been known to rock my IDGAF bun for weeks on end...). Here are a few of my tips to keep it spicey while protecting (and growing!) your strands.
  • Rock a cute bun.
Whenever I'm PSing but want to spice it up, the easiest (and free!) option is to rock a cute bun. For inspiration, check out Tumblr, Pinterest, or other hair girls blogs (Ebony at Longing4Length recently did a post featuring her favorite protective styles of 2012 with several buns!)
  • Wig it, baby!
Wigs are one of my favorite ways to spice it up while soft-core (haha you know what I mean...) protective styling. And they are so glamorous! I recently did a post on my fall-protective style, a U-Part wig. The best part of wearing wigs is that you can still take them off and tend to your hair underneath whenever (or however often) you need to. Additionally, with wigs you can choose how inexpensive (or expensive) you want to go based on the brand of wig/type of hair you decide to wear.
  • Accessorize it.
Cute hair clips, EZ-Combs, scarves, hats, headbands, headwraps... ANYTHING that can upgrade a basic bun/updo and take it to the next level! (Tip: Check out Forever 21, ebay and amazon for some cheapie hair accessories!)
  • Take a break and just let your hair down!
(OK, THIS ONE'S A CHEAT... SO WHAT?!) IMO nothing is more dangerous to your hair journey than apathetic laziness! No, seriously... there's keeping it simple but there's also a point when keeping it simple can go terribly wrong! Sometimes, it's okay to break out of the PS for a day or two in order to fall back in love with your tresses... trust me, once you see the progress that you've made, it will renew your vigor and commitment to keeping it protected in the first place!
How do you spice up your protective styles? Weigh in!

Until next time,
